FAQ's

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient treatment approach that is based on keeping the flow of the body's energy, called Qi, free and uninterrupted along energy paths called meridians. When an energy path is blocked, disruptions occur. Acupuncture restores the flow of energy and balance to the body so healing can occur.

What happens during an Acupuncture treatment?

Before the first treatment begins the acupuncturist obtains a detailed history and description of the presenting problem. You will be asked specific questions—the answers to which will be used in developing the treatment plan specific to you and your needs. Once the acupuncturist obtains the necessary information about your condition, your treatment will begin. Depending on the treatment plan, you may be asked to change into a gown so specific parts of your body can be accessed easily and clothing will not interfere with placement of the needles.

Is Acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture is very safe when administered by a qualified practitioner. All practitioners at Acupuncture Physical Therapy are certified by the NCCAOM (National Commission for the Certification of Acupuncturists and Oriental Medicine), which includes clean needle technique as part of their certification process. Rest assured only pre-sterilized, disposable needles are used.

"One of the advantages of acupuncture is that the incidence of adverse effects is substantially lower than that of many drugs or accepted medical procedures used for the same conditions."
— 1997 NIH Consensus Statement

Is Acupuncture painful?

Acupuncture needles are very fine and flexible—about the diameter or human hair. When the needles are inserted, you may experience a sensation of tingling or warmth. In most cases, insertion by a skillful practitioner is performed without discomfort. Many people are surprised to find that treatments are actually quite relaxing, and feel calm and refreshed after a session.
